2013 KW Polar Plunge Fundraiser for KidsAbility

_EBI3995e_webIt always starts the same way, with the filling of an over sized kiddie pool. As the water line rises, more and more curious onlookers gather around and Polar Plunge participants begin to populate the lineup at the registration table. Eventually, the brave souls that sign up take turns throwing themselves into a frigid pool of water while the crowd cheers them on to raise money for the people and programs at KidsAbility. Aside from the fundraising aspect and the various sponsors and entertainers, the best thing about the Polar Plunge is that it is a remarkably good spectator sport. There’s nothing like seeing a half naked, half-man, half-horse, cannonball into icey water to make you appreciate a hot cup of coffee and warm place to go home to.KW Polar Plunge PictureI volunteered my time to document the second year of this new KW community event in 2013, and I’m happy to be returning to the Polar Plunge as the official event photographer again in 2014. I’m not the sort of person who enjoys being out in the cold, but hanging out with a crowd of soaking wet, half costumed people really made me appreciate the fact that I was wearing a camera and a coat as opposed to something spandex. Thanks to the event sponsors and the terrific team of volunteers that made the 2013 Plunge such a success.

Yoga To Beat Cancer Event Photography in Victoria Park Pavilion

_EBI9314edittitlepageFriday November 22nd, 2013 was the night of the first ever Yoga to Beat Cancer fundraising event hosted by the Canadian Cancer society in Kitchener’s Victoria Park Pavilion. Close to 150 participants registered and collected donations from sponsors to draw strength and support from each other as a group and raise over $8000 for cancer research.

Queen St. Yoga instructors were on hand to lead fundraisers in a 2 hour yoga practice that was regularly punctuated by feverish dance party breaks. The DJs at the event had a great selection of current dance hits and the crowd was definitely feeling the music, twisting, leaping, and even doing a Conga line at one point. Unsure of exactly what to expect, the yogis were delighted by the inclusive and welcoming atmosphere of the glow in the dark dance party.

I would photograph the next Yoga to Beat Cancer event in a heartbeat! Even though I was stressing about how busy I was on the way over to the Pavilion, by the time I left the event I was in a far more relaxed and positive frame of mind.

As far as I’m concerned, this was a flawless first time event thanks to the amazing team at the Canadian Cancer Society and their trusty squad of community volunteers.

Thanks for a phantasmagoric evening!

Top Shots of 2013 by Emily Beatty Imagery

A Lot of Reasons To SmileYellow Pearl body painting by Alannah Mason and photography by Emily Beatty.

Well one thing is for certain; 2013 was a diverse and colourful year for me. I’m a little sleep deprived, but I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat. I think you’ll agree that the trends that emerge throughout these images are that I unabashedly adore colour, telling a story with my camera, and making photo sessions fun for people- especially little ones.

I was also fortunate to work with a number of other artists, and explore which areas of photography truly speak to my heart. Volunteering my photography skills to the Cambridge YWCA, The KW Polar Plunge, all the events at Steckle Heritage Farm, the Cambridge Relay for Life, Yoga to Beat Cancer, and the Creative Change program run by the Cambridge YWCA Girls’ Center were all terrific experiences that introduced me to new clients and new friends. You can now regularly find my art work for sale at The People’s Gallery in Uptown Waterloo, and on the walls at PUBLIC, the new restaurant run by my buddies at Mama Papa catering.  I got to know textile artist Sue Sturdy as I documented her community art exhibit, Colourful Roots, and Cheryl-Anne Webster, creator of the Beautiful Women Project, and collaborated with body painter Alannah Mason to create an exotic yellow portrait series. I also started a new annual community art show at Steckle Heritage Farm called ART BARN.

I’ve learned a million things in the past 12 months, and I can’t wait to implement them to bring you new and exciting photography experiences in the new year. I owe almost all of my success to word of mouth, and the wonderful marketing efforts of my friends, family, and loyal client base. To every one of you, a million times, THANK YOU! This is the best job ever. I hope I’ve brought you at least a handful of smiles this year. May 2014 bring you many, many more.

“Wake Up, Santa!” Breakfast at Steckle Heritage Farm

A HOLLY, JOLLY BREAKFAST WITH SANTA HIMSELF!

Once again, the staff at Steckle have come up with a totally unique community event. Their “Wake Up, Santa!” breakfast on November 30th was a real treat for both the young and the young at heart. My presence was a last minute thought, but I’m glad I was on hand to capture the atmosphere of joy in the barn that morning.

group photo at Steckle Heritage Farm in Kitchener

The staff at Steckle Heritage Farm pose for a photo with Santa outside the 180 year old barn.

Families arrived at the farm around 9am, and gathered around the curtained stage where Santa was rumoured to be snoozing. When the curtains were drawn, all the children shouted, “Wake up, Santa!” and the big man himself sat up with a smile! Santa put on his coat and his boots and proceeded to visit with all the breakfast guests while they enjoyed pancakes, sausages, clementines, hot drinks, and other goodies.

Once everybody got a chance to eat, Santa sat down on his special straw throne and invited all the children to meet him one at a time, take a loot bag, and pose for a photo or two. Children also had the opportunity to make a tree ornament and visit with all the animals that live year round at the farm.

There were a TON of smiles in the barn that morning before Santa had to head back to the North Pole. Merry Christmas to all the friends of Steckle!

Cicely & Dan’s Christmas Themed Wedding in Cincinnati

Happy Anniversary Cicely & Dan!!!

It’s hard to convey the excitement and the honour I felt when my dear cousin Cicely asked me to help document the biggest day of her life. It’s even harder to believe that it has already been a whole year since Dan and Cicely were wed in a spectacular holiday gala style wedding.

There were dinner parties and old friends, a ton of cousins, tea parties, fancy outfits, indulgent treats, and a festive wedding atmosphere that brought our holiday cheer to a whole new level. What started out as a winter wedding snowballed into an all out Christmas wedding party extravaganza, and I’m certain no one in attendance will ever forget it. From the festive decor to the groomsmen’s kilts, an ice cream bar and an impromptu photo with a group of bar crawling Santas, this was absolutely a one of a kind wedding.

C&D766_montage.jpg

My mom and Cicely’s dad are brother and sister. We grew up together, but only a few weekends a year- usually in the summer when the American Merritts would come stay with us on the way to the family cottage in Algonquin Park. Dan and Cicely first eyed each other up on the bus route heading to their university 7 or 8 years ago. Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Dan, and even his family pretty well, by sharing drinks, stories, some really good meals, and good times at the lake.

I can clearly recall Cic phoning us at a Canadian family gathering to tell us Dan had finally proposed during the 2010 holiday season. My (fabulous) grandmother said, “Well it will be a Christmas wedding then! The bride should wear red. Why not!?!” At the cottage the following summer, we decided that by working together with Cincinnati photographer Kate Foxbower, I could both document Cicely and Dan’s big day AND party like a guest. Thanks to my photography skills, I got to spend the majority of my cousin’s big day with her– an honour I will relive again and again through these photos.

Thanks to Kate Foxbower and Natalie Merritt for assisting me with these photos. They each took a handful of these shots, but the majority I’ve chosen to display are my own. Together, the three of us captured a plethora of memories from the festivities on December 8th, 2012. Here are a handful (OK, a big handful) of my favourite images from the big day. Check back here soon to see part 2 of 2 for all the fantastic party pictures taken at the reception

Enjoy!

Time Flies!

Dearest Reader,

Holiday theme photo shoot. Glitter and balloons.

How is it that the holiday season is already upon us? I feel like I’ve barely had time to blink since Labour Day, and I’m afraid my poor blog has suffered in the meantime. I’ve got a hundred posts constructed in my head, but I’ve been too busy to focus on my online presence other than daily Facebook posts, and the odd Pinterest or Instagram binge. This is good news in many ways, because it means I’ve been occupied with paying customers and volunteer work nearly every day from the beginning of fall right up until December.

Christmas Card by Emily BeattyI can’t thank you all enough for supporting me through your kind words, referrals, returning business, and participating in social media this year. 2013 has been the most challenging year of my life, but I’m just so pleased to be earning a living by being creative and doing what I love. Really, thank you.

Twin portrait for holidays. Here’s just a wee tiny sneak peek of the holiday images I’ve been working on for the past two weeks. To be honest, I can’t wait for the annual slow season for the photography industry. After Christmas is over, I’ll have time to blog about all the family portrait sessions, weddings, personal projects, sunsets, star photos, light painting experiments, DIY tutorials, and all kinds of other stuff that’s been preventing me from sleeping for the past 4 months. For now, please enjoy this snapshot of my bunny baby; Rorschacht.

Bunny holiday portrait. Sparkle Christmas picture. Please come back soon to see all the latest EBI adventures documented right here on my blog. Happy holidays! Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a splendid New Year. Cheers!

Elyse & Jessie’s Engagement Photo Sneak Peek

A ROMANTIC PICNIC FOR TWO

Elyse is an old friend with a new fiancee. I was thrilled when she and Jessie asked me to collaborate on some one of a kind engagement photos to mark the occasion. Since their wedding date is nearly two years off, we thought it was a good idea to document this romantic stage in their lives with some slightly styled portraits. We set up a picnic for them in a secluded area, and the rest is history.

I took all kinds of adorable snaps of Jessie and Elyse yesterday–then I got all excited and stayed up all night sorting and editing this preview. Congratulations ladies, I couldn’t be happier for you!

Aren’t these two super cute together? Show J & E some love in the comment section at the bottom of this post. The St. Jacobs Farmer’s Market Fire of 2013

THE AFTERMATH

_EBI7863edit_web

It has been just over a week since a devastating fire leveled the main building at the St. Jacobs Farmer’s Market over the Labour Day weekend. The following morning, my Facebook feed was absolutely blasted with people sharing their shock and disbelief about the fire. According to a recent Globe and Mail article, of a community of 300 regular vendors, “67 vendors lost their place of business,” and “25 more had places under a perimeter awning”. Fortunately no one was hurt, but the general consensus is that with harvest season upon us, this is just about the worst time of year that something like this could happen.

When you live in this community, the Market is an ingrained ritual, a place to enjoy warm apple fritters with friends, stock up on fresh local veggies for the week, and maybe to treat yourself to a $5 bouquet of seasonal flowers. We locals know to show up around 2 or 3 o’clock, near the end of the day for unbeatable deals on fresh, local produce. I hate to say it, but I had almost started to take the market for granted- until an event like this makes you stop and reflect on just how much this market means to people in our community. And I’m not just talking about St. Jacobs, or even Kitchener-Waterloo. There are people that regularly make the drive here from Toronto, Caledon, Orangeville and other not so close cities to enjoy the increasingly romantic notion of a traditional farmer’s market.

Now, a week after the devastation, authorities have ruled out foul play. With all the wooden timber in that building, no one seems surprised at how quickly it went up in flames. Despite quaint visions of Mennonites coming together for an epic barn raising type rebuild, the SJFM is owned and run by the Mercedes Corp, and they will go through the usual insurance procedures required to rebuild the main building. It’s the individual vendors that lost their entire stock of handmade arts and crafts that I feel the worst for. Meat and cheese will be replaced, but some of the artwork housed on the upper level of the main building is irreplaceable.

For now, the best thing people can do to support the market community is to go purchase goods from vendors as usual on Thursdays and Saturdays. As a professional portrait photographer, I’m lucky  to have control of my day to day work hours. When the market put out the word that they would be open as usual for Thursday Market hours, I shuffled some commitments, threw my camera bag in the car and headed for St. J’s to document the damage. Less than one week after the fire, here’s what I saw._EBI7817edit_web_EBI7826edit_web_EBI7822edit_web_EBI3596edit_web_EBI3628e_web_EBI3625e_web_EBI3605e_web

I know this community will have the main building up and running again just as soon as humanly possible.
