Elyse & Jessie’s Engagement Photo Sneak Peek

A ROMANTIC PICNIC FOR TWO

Elyse is an old friend with a new fiancee. I was thrilled when she and Jessie asked me to collaborate on some one of a kind engagement photos to mark the occasion. Since their wedding date is nearly two years off, we thought it was a good idea to document this romantic stage in their lives with some slightly styled portraits. We set up a picnic for them in a secluded area, and the rest is history.

I took all kinds of adorable snaps of Jessie and Elyse yesterday–then I got all excited and stayed up all night sorting and editing this preview. Congratulations ladies, I couldn’t be happier for you!

THE AFTERMATH

It has been just over a week since a devastating fire leveled the main building at the St. Jacobs Farmer’s Market over the Labour Day weekend. The following morning, my Facebook feed was absolutely blasted with people sharing their shock and disbelief about the fire. According to a recent Globe and Mail article, of a community of 300 regular vendors, “67 vendors lost their place of business,” and “25 more had places under a perimeter awning”. Fortunately no one was hurt, but the general consensus is that with harvest season upon us, this is just about the worst time of year that something like this could happen.

When you live in this community, the Market is an ingrained ritual, a place to enjoy warm apple fritters with friends, stock up on fresh local veggies for the week, and maybe to treat yourself to a $5 bouquet of seasonal flowers. We locals know to show up around 2 or 3 o’clock, near the end of the day for unbeatable deals on fresh, local produce. I hate to say it, but I had almost started to take the market for granted- until an event like this makes you stop and reflect on just how much this market means to people in our community. And I’m not just talking about St. Jacobs, or even Kitchener-Waterloo. There are people that regularly make the drive here from Toronto, Caledon, Orangeville and other not so close cities to enjoy the increasingly romantic notion of a traditional farmer’s market.

Now, a week after the devastation, authorities have ruled out foul play. With all the wooden timber in that building, no one seems surprised at how quickly it went up in flames. Despite quaint visions of Mennonites coming together for an epic barn raising type rebuild, the SJFM is owned and run by the Mercedes Corp, and they will go through the usual insurance procedures required to rebuild the main building. It’s the individual vendors that lost their entire stock of handmade arts and crafts that I feel the worst for. Meat and cheese will be replaced, but some of the artwork housed on the upper level of the main building is irreplaceable.

For now, the best thing people can do to support the market community is to go purchase goods from vendors as usual on Thursdays and Saturdays. As a professional portrait photographer, I’m lucky to have control of my day to day work hours. When the market put out the word that they would be open as usual for Thursday Market hours, I shuffled some commitments, threw my camera bag in the car and headed for St. J’s to document the damage. Less than one week after the fire, here’s what I saw.

The strangest sight I encountered: a lone, uprooted carrot, roasted in the fire.

These 2 buildings are still intact, thanks to local firefighters that focused their efforts on containing the fire to one building.

Miss E’s Fun First Birthday Portraits

MIRACLE BABY TURNS ONE! Miss E is a miracle baby. Her parents were told they wouldn’t conceive a child together naturally, and yet here she is, already one year old! I first met Erika, her mother, Stacey, and their family back in October for the baby’s first ever photo shoot. We all got along great and I was thrilled when S called me up at the beginning of the summer to plan a second shoot for Miss E’s first birthday.We briefly considered doing a cake smash, but S told me that she wanted something a little more unique to celebrate E’s first birthday. We discussed the backdrops and colour schemes that we wanted to include, and one August Monday morning, I drove out to their home in St. Clements with a carload full of equipment and coordinating props for our shoot.Luckily, Stacey’s parents were both on hand to keep their granddaughter smiling and full of snacks throughout her big day. It was a real treat to have 3 sets of adult hands assisting me with these photos. Attentive family members behind the scenes can make all the difference when it comes to photographing little ones. Thanks for your help J & D, and happy birthday Miss E!One of the best parts of being a portrait photographer is watching your clients grow up right in front of your lens. It was a pleasure to document Erika at both 2 months, and one year. Here’s hoping we have many more fun photo shoots together in our future.

Creature Quest Animal Portraits

Nine years ago, I was sitting on a bench in the Humber Arboretum studying astronomy when a young woman came up to me and asked, “How would you like to get paid to go swimming 3 times a week?” This was the beginning of a life changing job as a nature interpreter and camp counselor at the arboretum, and a friendship with Yolanta that continues to this day.

Back then, I was attending the University of Guelph-Humber and living in Rexdale year round. I spent my summers living with close friends and hiking around teaching kids about how to find insects and how an oxbow river is formed and how to make dream catchers, and identify urban wildlife and 1000 other things. Yolanta and her boyfriend Duane were running the nature center back then, along with our friend Sean. For the first time, I found myself looking forward to coming into work every single day. Working at the Humber Arboretum made me realize how much your quality of life improves when you are lucky enough to work at a job that is fun, and fulfilling in different ways every day. That experience had a lot to do with my journey to become a professional photographer. This job is not easy, but I love it. My bank account is always overdrawn– but its absolutely worth it to pursue this dream. Within a few years, I’m hoping I can live comfortably on my photography skills, so that I can have the flexibility and the free time to raise some happy babies with Todd.

Fast forward to March 2013, when I got a very exciting e-mail from Yolanta. In the nearly six years since we had parted ways, she and Duane had gotten married, started an educational business, and their family grew to include 2 sons and a daughter. They were looking for someone to help create imagery for their website and marketing materials online and throughout the GTA. I jumped at the chance to catch up with old friends and meet their new animals.

Creature Quest is Duane and Yolanta’s business and their life. Their team travels around the Toronto area with a collection of both friendly and exotic animals, educating and entertaining kids everywhere they go. Their devotion to the animals is evident from the way they research and talk about them to the way they handle them– and respect those that don’t enjoy being handled. Whether they are making a public appearance, hosting a birthday party, or leading an educational program, the animal handlers at Creature Quest are absolute professionals. They made me feel safe and comfortable throughout our 10+ hour shoot with many animals that can be considered poisonous or dangerous.

I went to check out Creature Quest headquarters with a car full of lighting equipment and props, and we spent an entire day documenting 50+ creatures. It was one of the most fun and enlightening shoots I’ve ever done. Here’s a sample of the different species we photographed. Enjoy!

The CQ team is using large prints of these photos to decorate their booth at shows and demonstrations, to advertise, and to use for their social media. I honestly can’t wait to work with Duane and Yolanta and their team again. They just got a long anticipated baby wallaby, so a new shoot may be necessary soon! P.S. I’m really afraid of snakes. Bet you couldn’t tell from these pics! I was an average of 5 feet from these huge specimens, with a handler shielding me with a plywood board. I was pretty proud of myself for staying professional around one of my biggest fears. (Second after getting stabbed in the eye.) In real life they freaked me out a bit- because they move FAST. In the resulting photographs, now that they are still and frozen on my screen, I can appreciate their beauty.

Lister Family Portraits on the Beach in Oliphant

THREE COUPLES, ONE FAMILY. PART ONE OF THREE.

Ok, so the sky wasn’t quite this blue- but I was curious to see what it would look like if I really played up the blue theme for just one shot. (This picture perfect sky came from a separate photo taken in exactly the same location one month earlier on a sunnier day.)

Mr. and Mrs. Lister, AKA my boyfriend’s grandparents, have been wonderfully supportive of my photography ambitions. The last time I saw them, Mrs. Lister asked if I might be able to document all three of her sons and their respective families over the course of summer 2013. It is an ambitious request, since the boys and their kids live all over the place. Fortunately, the family cottages in Oliphant keep the Lister crew in contact throughout the year. My BF’s parents met on this very beach growing up with cottages two lots apart. Now there are 4 family cottages in Oliphant, and there are several weekends every year where the beach is overrun with Listers.

Canada Day weekend, we ran into Ken and his two daughters, Meredith and Adrienne, all up for the weekend with their respective partners. Saturday evening, I brought up Mrs. Lister’s plan to photograph her kids and grandkids, and we decided to give it a go- after a campfire and some rest.

We started our shoot around 11am on Sunday morning, with rain in the forecast. The overcast skies provided great lighting for several family arrangements and a mini shoot for each of the 3 couples in this family. It had been years since this group had family portraits taken, and I think we all had a good time with our shoot. I wanted to include the profusion of wildflowers in bloom at the time, and was pleased to have such beautiful, romantic couples to work with.

Unique Newborn Portraits for a Sweet Baby Girl in Kitchener

Just 5 days old, Miss Hayden was a perfect angel for her first photo shoot. Holli and Graham came onto the scene a couple years ago when some of our best friends moved into a house 2 doors down from them. H & G are a good time, all the time. They have a wonderfully supportive and loving group of friends and family surrounding them, and are always the life of any party. Almost exactly a year ago, my partner and I were sitting in their backyard sharing drinks before walking to Ribfest with a group of friends. It was just a few weeks later that they got the good news.

The next time I saw the two of them, just before Easter, they had a 5 day old baby girl! The first thing H & G did when I arrived with all my photography gear was to show me the outfit they’d picked out for their daughter to wear to Ribfest 4 months later. The second thing they did was show me the silver pot and veggies that Graham had organized for a particular photo he had in mind. It’s always a pleasure to work with a couple that is willing to experiment and play around a bit with different concepts. I was at H & G’s house for several hours hanging out with the new fam, and trying several unique photo setups in their living room. It was long, but exceptionally productive newborn shoot! Take a look.Miss Hayden was such a good baby during her shoot! We worked at her pace, and took frequent breaks to let her breastfeed throughout the afternoon. Her parents were wonderfully patient and it really paid off. One of the best tricks we implemented to keep Miss H sleepy was to preheat each setup with a $14 heating pad before trying to pose her. Most of the time, she snuggled right in and stayed put until we tried to move her to the next setup. If only every newborn was such an exceptional model! She even cooperated while we stuffed fresh lettuce leaves and towels around her in a cooking pot for this one of kind shot.

Once we had captured a few different looks for the baby, we moved on to portraits of the new family, all together. The love in the room was palpable during this session, and I think you’ll find you can see it in the photos.

I can’t wait to see what kind of person Hayden grows up to be. I’m predicting a sweet, fun-loving, mischief maker that’s also really into BBQ. One thing is for certain, she will grow up well loved and well fed. Congratulations to this beautiful new family.

Taylor & Kristen’s May Wedding at Glenerin Inn

Growing up with my cousin Taylor and the rest of the Merritt cousins, we spent a lot of time in Mem and Papa’s barn jumping around in a tall maze of straw bales and feeding the cows, sharing cottage time in Algonquin park, and at the kid’s table at family functions. We welcomed Kristen into the family a couple years ago after she and Taylor met in university in Waterloo. Their shared class became a friendship, and this May 2013 it finally became a marriage! Kristen brings a joyful presence to every event she attends, and she has been a welcome addition to the Merritt clan from the first moment we met her. She’s endured the full family reunion and several family weddings and let me tell you, this girl is a keeper. I do at Glenerin Inn, Mississauga

Taylor found the perfect bride, and they had a perfect wedding– as far as I could tell, it went off without a hitch. Although it was tempting to shoot their wedding, we decided I would have more fun as a guest than as the working photographer. We are the kind of cousins that actually hang out every month or two, and we will travel for practically a day to attend a Merritt wedding. Our family parties are not to be missed, and Taylor and Kristen’s wedding was no exception. I took this handful (ha) of photos at their wedding. The entire event, including the ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner and dancing all happened at the lovely Glenerin Inn in Mississauga. You’d never know you’re in Mississauga, it was a very peaceful and stately property. There were plenty of mature maple trees, a timeless looking stone building, outdoor decks and patios, and a friendly and efficient staff running the event. Each aspect of the wedding happened in a different room of the Inn. The bride’s cousin is a wedding planner and her little touches went a long way. We saw lots of baby’s breath, white lace, a cupcake tower, rustic burlap and twine touches, and beautiful sage green bridesmaid’s dresses.

IT TAKES A REAL MAN TO WALK A MILE IN RED HEELS

Luckily, Cambridge men of all ages were up for the fundraising challenge at noon on Wednesday, June 12th. Walk A Mile In Her Shoes is an event that happens annually in various Canadian communities to raise awareness and funds that support the YWCA, and the women’s and girls’ programs that they run. I’ve recently done some volunteer work for the Cambridge location, and was thrilled when they asked me to donate my photography skills and a framed prize photo to the event.

It really was a very positive experience, with no shortage of great photo ops! The pictures practically took themselves.

Male friends and family beware, I’ll be asking some of you to form a team for this event next summer. CELEBRATE REMEMBER FIGHT BACK

A couple months ago, a family friend asked if I’d be willing to spend a night documenting just one of the many Relay For Life events happening around the world this summer. This year happens to be the 75th anniversary for the Canadian Cancer Society, and therefore a particularly special year for Relay. The theme would be Fighting Cancer Around The World. Of course I said yes.

Relay For Life is an inspirational, non-competitive, 12-hour overnight fundraising event that brings a community together to celebrate life and fight cancer. Relay has a festival-like atmosphere and people register as teams whether they are families, co-workers, or friends. I count myself among the fortunate few that haven’t been directly touched by Cancer, but 1 in 3 Canadians will eventually have to face a Cancer journey of some kind. During my lifetime, its bound to affect me or someone I love, so I figure now’s as good a time as any to get involved in this inspirational annual event.

Participants walked laps around the track at Preston High School from 7pm to 7am. I was there for 8 of the 12 hours, from the very beginning until about 1am. By then the Relayers had settled into their rhythms for the night, snoozing in tents around the track in between shifts walking the track. There were entertaining moments, joyful moments, sad moments, triumphant moments, and plenty of hope.

In the end, Relay For Life, Cambridge, 2013 raised over $155,000 to support Canadians in our community fight Cancer. Outstanding effort everyone, especially the top fundraisers, Team Conquer For Brave Mateo. It was an honour to document this event, thanks for including me, Cambridge.

Bagpiper Iain leads the first lap around the track during the emotional luminary ceremony where all the commemorative luminaries are lit.

Coffee break after nearly 7 hours of constant walking around the event with my camera.

She raised $85 and made a significant donation to Locks For Love.

Now it’s getting late…

Settling in for a long night of laps.

Even at 1am, team spirit was still going strong.
