Fun Lister Family Photos on the Beach in Oliphant

_OliphantFamilyPhotographer_webIt feels appropriate to share these portraits with you today, on Family Day.

When Mr. and Mrs. Lister asked me to document all three of their sons and their families, I was pretty pumped. I was their grandson’s girlfriend, and we had gotten to know each other well in the seven years since Todd and I began dating. GGA and GGB, as they are known to the Listers are just lovely people, always smiling and optimistic. I wanted to create a fantastic series of photos that would capture the essence of their family throughout three generations.

The first Lister shoot was done early in the summer, and a few months later, we assembled the second family on the beach at their home for their first ever full family portrait session. We went with a red, white and blue theme, to celebrate both our Canadian and American ties, and also because there is a strong nautical tradition in the family.

The landscape you’ll see below is in beautiful Oliphant Ontario, just a few kilometers from Sauble Beach. Generations of the same families have grown up on these shores. Years ago, a boy named Gord fell in love with a Michigan beauty queen named Priscilla when she came to spend her summers just two cottages down from his. They were married, and eventually purchased a third lot just a few doors down from both of their parents. Over the years as their family grew, their cottage also expanded and about 10 years ago they sold their home so that they might enjoy Oliphant year round. Needless to say, this beach and this view has a huge place in the hearts of everybody in the family.OliphantFamilyPhotographer

That means that these people are officially going to be my family! I couldn’t be happier, because they have welcomed me with open arms from the very start and I already feel like part of the family. I love you guys, and I can’t wait to celebrate our wedding day with you and make it all official.

Happy Family Day!

Best of 2013 Valentine’s Sweetie Portraits

Babies and Candies and Cupcakes, Oh My!

I recall telling my friend Jared that I wanted to do something “disgustingly cute” leading up to Valentine’s Day last year. I envisioned a set that would be so adorable that even if the babies weren’t in the mood for a photo shoot, we’d still end up with super cute images. (And cupcakes.) It turned out to be a good strategy, as only about half of these little ones were feeling cooperative that day.twin Valentine photo

The 2013 shoot also gave me the incentive to learn how to make French macarons, a difficult recipe that I am proud to have (almost) mastered in the past year. Want to try your own macarons? Here’s an excellent tutorial.

Did I succeed? Are these disgustingly cute? I need your feedback! Which elements do you want to see again this year? What can I change or add to make it better? Round two of Valentine’s Sweetie Shoots are coming up fast, so please give me some feedback in the comments below! kids_portraitsValentine's mini photo sessionValentine_Photos_KW_EmilyBeattytwin photographer

Winter Graffiti Art Photography in Kitchener

portrait photographer Emily Beatty“We are currently under a blizzard warning.” said the man on the radio as I gathered my gear. Perfect. I’ve been visiting the same hidden graffiti wall near the train tracks in Kitchener for over 5 years now, but this was the first time I’d ventured out in an actual blizzard. I figured it would add some interesting texture and sense of atmosphere to my photos. I didn’t imagine I’d have to bust my way through a snow bank nearly as tall as myself to access the hidden wall.

I think it was worth the effort, because once I’ve got a particular photographic scene in my head, I can’t rest until I see it it physically emerging from my printer. Translating an image from a dream to a reality is an incredibly rewarding way to make a living, and trudging through knee high snow drifts with five bags of equipment and props in -40 degree weather on a hunt for the perfect setting for my surreal clothesline image reminded me of what it was like to be a college student, just excited to be out the world with a camera.KW graffiti photographyOver the recent holiday season, Todd gave me 5 pairs of alarmingly bright two tone knee socks– because as I’m fond of saying, “I love a good gradient.” I so admired the socks that I envisioned a scene where they hung on a line in front of some fresh and colourful graffiti before they went through the wash a bunch of times and started to lose their vibrance. I hadn’t visited my usual wall for a few months, and expected some new artwork. Surprisingly, there was just one new piece since my last visit, so it was the one I chose to highlight with my crazy bright clothesline.

_EBI3614editgraffiti photo Emily Beatty_EBI3700editgraffiti photography Kitchener_EBI3621edit72dpiIn addition to wanting to document my socks, I also wanted at least one good shot of my newly blue hair. In 2013 when my stylist and I spent 13 hours creating “peacock hair” using bleach, 5 shades of hair colour and about 25 foils, we only ever took one photo of the end result. (Which was pretty spectacular, I have to say.) While the blue took a mere 6 hours to create, I still figured it deserved at least one decent shot for the record books. Consequently, this was the first time I took a tripod to the wall with the intention of creating a self portrait. I took about 5 snaps, then gave up because I was beginning to worry that my fingers were literally freezing, and maybe I should have paid more attention to that weather dude that told me to stay indoors. self portrait by Emily Beatty

In my experience, the images I create for my own satisfaction are the ones that people respond to with the most enthusiasm when viewing my portfolio. This is why it is so vitally important for photographers that consider themselves artists to continuously pursue personal work and creative projects, just for the fun of it. Its easy to fall out of love with photography once it becomes your day to day reality and a means to an end.

My business philosophy involves the mantra, “do something you love long enough, and eventually someone will pay you to do it.” Here’s hoping! These photos may not make it onto anybody’s wall. They probably won’t inspire a bride to hire me for a wedding, or convince a new mother to choose me to document her brand new bundle of joy. Its unlikely that I’ll ever make any money off of them, and yet they are deeply satisfying to me. I’m using my camera to follow my heart… and so far it’s been a colourful quest!

If you enjoyed this post, kindly like it, share it, or leave a comment below. It is always much appreciated when you help me share my work, and bring new visitors to this blog. Have a most excellent day!

Top Shots of 2013 by Emily Beatty Imagery

A Lot of Reasons To SmileYellow Pearl body painting by Alannah Mason and photography by Emily Beatty.

Well one thing is for certain; 2013 was a diverse and colourful year for me. I’m a little sleep deprived, but I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat. I think you’ll agree that the trends that emerge throughout these images are that I unabashedly adore colour, telling a story with my camera, and making photo sessions fun for people- especially little ones.

I was also fortunate to work with a number of other artists, and explore which areas of photography truly speak to my heart. Volunteering my photography skills to the Cambridge YWCA, The KW Polar Plunge, all the events at Steckle Heritage Farm, the Cambridge Relay for Life, Yoga to Beat Cancer, and the Creative Change program run by the Cambridge YWCA Girls’ Center were all terrific experiences that introduced me to new clients and new friends. You can now regularly find my art work for sale at The People’s Gallery in Uptown Waterloo, and on the walls at PUBLIC, the new restaurant run by my buddies at Mama Papa catering.  I got to know textile artist Sue Sturdy as I documented her community art exhibit, Colourful Roots, and Cheryl-Anne Webster, creator of the Beautiful Women Project, and collaborated with body painter Alannah Mason to create an exotic yellow portrait series. I also started a new annual community art show at Steckle Heritage Farm called ART BARN.

I’ve learned a million things in the past 12 months, and I can’t wait to implement them to bring you new and exciting photography experiences in the new year. I owe almost all of my success to word of mouth, and the wonderful marketing efforts of my friends, family, and loyal client base. To every one of you, a million times, THANK YOU! This is the best job ever. I hope I’ve brought you at least a handful of smiles this year. May 2014 bring you many, many more.

“Wake Up, Santa!” Breakfast at Steckle Heritage Farm

A HOLLY, JOLLY BREAKFAST WITH SANTA HIMSELF!

Once again, the staff at Steckle have come up with a totally unique community event. Their “Wake Up, Santa!” breakfast on November 30th was a real treat for both the young and the young at heart. My presence was a last minute thought, but I’m glad I was on hand to capture the atmosphere of joy in the barn that morning.

group photo at Steckle Heritage Farm in Kitchener

The staff at Steckle Heritage Farm pose for a photo with Santa outside the 180 year old barn.

Families arrived at the farm around 9am, and gathered around the curtained stage where Santa was rumoured to be snoozing. When the curtains were drawn, all the children shouted, “Wake up, Santa!” and the big man himself sat up with a smile! Santa put on his coat and his boots and proceeded to visit with all the breakfast guests while they enjoyed pancakes, sausages, clementines, hot drinks, and other goodies.

Once everybody got a chance to eat, Santa sat down on his special straw throne and invited all the children to meet him one at a time, take a loot bag, and pose for a photo or two. Children also had the opportunity to make a tree ornament and visit with all the animals that live year round at the farm.

There were a TON of smiles in the barn that morning before Santa had to head back to the North Pole. Merry Christmas to all the friends of Steckle!

Time Flies!

Dearest Reader,

Holiday theme photo shoot. Glitter and balloons.

How is it that the holiday season is already upon us? I feel like I’ve barely had time to blink since Labour Day, and I’m afraid my poor blog has suffered in the meantime. I’ve got a hundred posts constructed in my head, but I’ve been too busy to focus on my online presence other than daily Facebook posts, and the odd Pinterest or Instagram binge. This is good news in many ways, because it means I’ve been occupied with paying customers and volunteer work nearly every day from the beginning of fall right up until December.

Christmas Card by Emily BeattyI can’t thank you all enough for supporting me through your kind words, referrals, returning business, and participating in social media this year. 2013 has been the most challenging year of my life, but I’m just so pleased to be earning a living by being creative and doing what I love. Really, thank you.

Twin portrait for holidays. Here’s just a wee tiny sneak peek of the holiday images I’ve been working on for the past two weeks. To be honest, I can’t wait for the annual slow season for the photography industry. After Christmas is over, I’ll have time to blog about all the family portrait sessions, weddings, personal projects, sunsets, star photos, light painting experiments, DIY tutorials, and all kinds of other stuff that’s been preventing me from sleeping for the past 4 months. For now, please enjoy this snapshot of my bunny baby; Rorschacht.

Elyse & Jessie’s Engagement Photo Sneak Peek

A ROMANTIC PICNIC FOR TWO

Elyse is an old friend with a new fiancee. I was thrilled when she and Jessie asked me to collaborate on some one of a kind engagement photos to mark the occasion. Since their wedding date is nearly two years off, we thought it was a good idea to document this romantic stage in their lives with some slightly styled portraits. We set up a picnic for them in a secluded area, and the rest is history.

I took all kinds of adorable snaps of Jessie and Elyse yesterday–then I got all excited and stayed up all night sorting and editing this preview. Congratulations ladies, I couldn’t be happier for you!

The St. Jacobs Farmer’s Market Fire of 2013

THE AFTERMATH

_EBI7863edit_web

It has been just over a week since a devastating fire leveled the main building at the St. Jacobs Farmer’s Market over the Labour Day weekend. The following morning, my Facebook feed was absolutely blasted with people sharing their shock and disbelief about the fire. According to a recent Globe and Mail article, of a community of 300 regular vendors, “67 vendors lost their place of business,” and “25 more had places under a perimeter awning”. Fortunately no one was hurt, but the general consensus is that with harvest season upon us, this is just about the worst time of year that something like this could happen.

When you live in this community, the Market is an ingrained ritual, a place to enjoy warm apple fritters with friends, stock up on fresh local veggies for the week, and maybe to treat yourself to a $5 bouquet of seasonal flowers. We locals know to show up around 2 or 3 o’clock, near the end of the day for unbeatable deals on fresh, local produce. I hate to say it, but I had almost started to take the market for granted- until an event like this makes you stop and reflect on just how much this market means to people in our community. And I’m not just talking about St. Jacobs, or even Kitchener-Waterloo. There are people that regularly make the drive here from Toronto, Caledon, Orangeville and other not so close cities to enjoy the increasingly romantic notion of a traditional farmer’s market.

Now, a week after the devastation, authorities have ruled out foul play. With all the wooden timber in that building, no one seems surprised at how quickly it went up in flames. Despite quaint visions of Mennonites coming together for an epic barn raising type rebuild, the SJFM is owned and run by the Mercedes Corp, and they will go through the usual insurance procedures required to rebuild the main building. It’s the individual vendors that lost their entire stock of handmade arts and crafts that I feel the worst for. Meat and cheese will be replaced, but some of the artwork housed on the upper level of the main building is irreplaceable.

For now, the best thing people can do to support the market community is to go purchase goods from vendors as usual on Thursdays and Saturdays. As a professional portrait photographer, I’m lucky  to have control of my day to day work hours. When the market put out the word that they would be open as usual for Thursday Market hours, I shuffled some commitments, threw my camera bag in the car and headed for St. J’s to document the damage. Less than one week after the fire, here’s what I saw._EBI7817edit_web_EBI7826edit_web_EBI7822edit_web_EBI3596edit_web_EBI3628e_web_EBI3625e_web_EBI3605e_web

Miss E’s Fun First Birthday Portraits

MIRACLE BABY TURNS ONE!Baby girl first birthday portraits. Miss E is a miracle baby. Her parents were told they wouldn’t conceive a child together naturally, and yet here she is, already one year old!
